 Donalds Better Self Picture

Choose how you will dine with your Lord today:

Read Philippians Chapter 1 (Fast Food)

Read Philippians Chapter 1 (Home Cooking)

Read Philippians Chapters 1-4 (Fine Dining)

As you read, again make note of any keywords or reflections as the Lord speaks to your heart.

To Live or Die?-Philippians Chapter 1:21-26

I really struggled over this particular passage in Philippians.  I kept asking myself why would Paul be struggling with whether to live or die?  I literally kept asking over and over as I wrote down things that came to my mind.  Then God in His faithfulness opened my eyes to His truth.  He placed the image of Jesus in the garden of Gethsemane.  It was in the account in Mark 14:32-41 that I found my answer.  Jesus Himself had a similar struggle with whether to live or die.

Read the account in Mark 14:32-41.

Why was Jesus in distress and horrified? (v34).

Why was Paul being pressured to live and to die? (v23)

What does Jesus pray in Mark 14:35-36?

What does Paul say in Philippians 1:22b, 24-26?

Christ knows that His disciples will gain more courage through receiving the Holy Spirit only through Christ’s death. (John 16:5-15).

To Live

To Die

Christ will be highly honored in his body (v20b)  Christ wins no matter what!!  But Satan futilely tries to make Paul have an internal struggle, but is unsuccessful.  Christ will be highly honored in his body (v20b)  Christ wins no matter what!!
Is Christ (v21) Is Gain (v21)
Fruitful work (v22) Is far better (v23)
More necessary for his friends (v24)
Progress and joy for his friends (v25)
Confidence will grow in Christ Jesus when they see him again in person (v26)

Why does Paul say that his body will highly honor Christ in life or death? (v21)

What does living in Christ mean? (v22)

Why is it a struggle for Paul to decide if he would rather die or live?  (v23-24)

Personal Reflections

To live is Christ for Paul and to die is his gain.  Paul will go further in depth as to what it truly means to live as Christ in chapter 2.  But before he moves on he does ask one request of the Philippians which we will study together next time.  Until then, take some time to reflect on whether you truly believe your life reflects living as Christ.   Are you at peace whether God allows you to live another day here on earth or if He has decided today will be your last day?  How will you spend it?
