Standing Up Whatever the Cost-Philippians Chapter 1:12-20
Since this is a letter to dear friends, Paul opened it with cheerfulness, encouragement, and comfort for his friend. He continues to try to answer anticipated questions from his friends.
What does Paul anticipate his friends are concerned about? (v. 12-13)
How does he handle the situation?
Have you ever not wanted to concern your parents or children about something? Paul approaches the updates of his situation in the same way.
What result does Paul give for the situation he is in? (v.12)
Does Paul give a reason why he is in prison?
How is his imprisonment advancing the gospel? (v. 13)
In today’s time, we only hear about preachers and pastors being in prison if they have committed some immoral act such as adultery or fraud. Despite all the attention these pastors receive from the news media, there are some even today who are being persecuted for their zeal in spreading the gospel message. Please visit Voice of the Martyrs to find out more about how you can support and pray for these individuals and families.
What two reactions does Paul give for those who hear the rumor he is in prison for the cause of Christ? (v. 14-16)
The ones who preach out of envy and strife do so why? (v. 15, 17)
What are Paul’s two reactions to those who are his rivalries? (v.18)
Why does Paul rejoice? (v.19)
How will he be delivered? (v. 19)
Not only will the preaching of God’s word deliver Paul, but what else? (v. 19)
We can do nothing unless the Holy Spirit works through us. How does this knowledge impact Paul? (v. 20)
Paul’s life points us to Christ’s life. When Christ is being ridiculed, etc. his response is similar to Paul’s, he does not get discouraged. Christ changed the culture that was around Him.
When Christians begin to stand up for what is right around them, what impact does it have? It changes the culture around them!! When it changes the culture around you, people get delivered.
As you take a look at these examples of individuals and companies from this past year who are standing up for what is right now matter the cost, prayerfully consider how God wants you to stand up for Him.
