Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.
We have all heard it said and all know that in truth it is a lie and yet have found our own mouths saying it from time to time. But why? Why do we choose to listen to the father of lies (John 8:44) regarding the names we are called?
There is probably nothing more that I enjoy more than listening to water and waves. Growing up I would just sit out on the pier in the evenings and watch the sunset into the water listening to the waters lap up against the pier. I would go to the beach and just lay there listening to the water roll up on to the shoreline. Still today, I love to reflect and listen to the gentle sound that whispers over the top of the water.
But one has to be still and quiet in order to really hear the gentle whisper (1 Kings 19:12) of the Spring. Our bible study teacher this past Sunday challenged us to really ask God what He calls us. Not just as a body of believers, but the name He has for each individual. With this on my mind this week, I was so excited to read this morning the following verses.
“Nations will see your righteousness and all kings, your glory. You will be called by a new name that the Lord ’s mouth will announce. You will be a glorious crown in the Lord ’s hand, and a royal diadem in the palm of your God. You will no longer be called Deserted, and your land will not be called Desolate; instead, you will be called My Delight is in Her, and your land Married; for the Lord delights in you, and your land will be married. For as a young man marries a young woman, so your sons will marry you; and as a groom rejoices over his bride, so your God will rejoice over you.” Isaiah 62:2-5
“Go out, go out through the gates; prepare a way for the people! Build it up, build up the highway; clear away the stones! Raise a banner for the peoples. Look, the Lord has proclaimed to the ends of the earth, “Say to Daughter Zion: Look, your salvation is coming, His reward is with Him, and His gifts accompany Him.” And they will be called the Holy People, the Lord ’s Redeemed; and you will be called Cared For, A City Not Deserted.” Isaiah 62:10-12
You might not be able to still away to the beach or a nice fishing pier (if you do feel free to take me with you!), but we can all take the time to reflect on what our God calls us and then raise our banners with the truth to those around us. Other people need to hear what God calls them too!!
