A great misconception of sanctification is that you will be bound by all kinds of rules and regulations not be able to do anything that is exciting. What a lie and so far from the truth!! Satan spews these lies to cover the false freedom he promotes while Christ Jesus promotes the true freedom that comes from remaining in His Word.
So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed Him, “If you continue in My word, you really are My disciples. You will know the truth and the truth will set you free.” John 8:31-32
One of the joys of sanctification is the simple fact that it continually sets us free!! While being conformed more into the image of Christ is uncomfortable and just downright painful at times, it is the persistent refining through God’s word that allows our joy to be made complete. In addition, the sanctification process keeps us from going back to the flesh to meet our needs. This process takes time. It is not whipped up in a one-night Christian concert, one sermon from a dynamic pastor/speaker, nor a week long old-time revival meeting. Instead, this process is slow and begins with humbling ourselves before the great God Almighty. J. C. Ryle in his book Holiness, warns against Satan’s false promotion of quick change and the slow, steadfast love-changing freedom that comes through the Holy Spirits work of sanctification within the true disciple of Christ.
Let us beware in this day of healing wounds slightly, and crying, `Peace, Peace’, when there is no peace. Let us urge on every one who exhibits new interest in religion to be content with nothing short of the deep, solid, sanctifying work of the Holy Ghost. Reaction, after false religious excitement, is a most deadly disease of the soul. When the devil is only temporarily cast out of a man in the heat of a revival, and by and by returns to his house, the last state becomes worse than the first. Better a thousand times begin more slowly, and then “continue in the word” steadfastly, than begin in a hurry, without counting the cost, and by and by look back, with Lot’s wife, and return to the world. I declare I know no state of soul more dangerous than to imagine we are born again and sanctified by the Holy Ghost, because we have picked up a few religious feelings (Ryle, 25).
How true Christ knew what He was telling the disciples when He told them to continue in the Word. Apart from the Word, the truth is not found and one is easily swayed by the false freedom that comes from the lies of the enemy.
Lord, give us the courage to not settle for quick one-night stands. Instead, Lord, woo us into Your Word. Speak softly to our hard hearts and let Your rain of tender mercy and grace fall down on us and set us free.
