Day 20: Sex & Sanctification

our-sanctification-includes-sanctification-in-our-sexualityIn a sex-saturated society, it is difficult to navigate and live amongst a people that deny the true heart of what God desires for His creation.  His desire for man and woman, created in His image (Genesis 1:27), to be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth and subdue it (Genesis 1:28) has been lost.  What God declared good in the beginning, sin contaminated and pitted man against God and man against man.  However, even in the area of sexuality, God’s perfect redemption, and power through the blood of Jesus Christ pours out onto His children enabling sexual sanctification.

For this is God’s will, your sanctification: that you abstain from sexual immorality, so that each of you knows how to control his own body in sanctification and honor, not with lustful desires, like the Gentiles who don’t know God.  This means one must not transgress against and defraud his brother in this matter, because the Lord is an avenger of all these offenses, as we also previously told and warned you.  For God has not called us to impurity but to sanctification.  Therefore, the person who rejects this does not reject man, but God, who also gives you His Holy Spirit.  1 Thessalonians 4:3-8

God said it.  I believe it.  That settles it.  Tempted to leave it at that, but challenged by the overwhelming truth and standard by which God has called His people.

God’s will for believers is to abstain from sexual immorality.

As we discussed in Food and Sanctification, our bodies are the temple in which Christ dwells.  Therefore, God wants us to know how to control and bring honor to the home where He resides.  Our lives should not reflect the unbelief and lustful desires found rampant in this world but should mirror the image and heart of the Living God in whom we were created.

God commands sanctification, not impurity.

The harsh reality is, if you reject sexual sanctification in your life, you reject God.  Today the church looks more like the world than the world looks like the church.  This truth should grieve and pierce the hearts of all God’s children.  It should bring us to our knees crying out for God to cut away all lustful desires, thoughts, and action from the church body of Christ so that the world would be able to see the purity and joy found in a Holy God.

Oh pure, holy, magnificent God.  Sanctify our sexuality.  Sanctify our eyes to be fixed on the author and perfecter of our faith, Christ Jesus instead of magazines, movies, or lustful images.  Sanctify our ears to hear the still small voice of God instead of the degrading music and battering that degrades and devalues all human life.  Sanctify our hands to give healing, comfort, and assurance instead of shame and inappropriate touches.  Sanctify our feet to carry the true, pure gospel of salvation to the nations instead of carrying us to places where darkness hides.   Sanctify our broken hearts by binding them up instead of allowing them to be trampled upon again.  God, help us to honor the marriage bed as good and pleasing in Your sight.  Help us to honor and praise marriage highly in this world and may we support and encourage those around us to pursue the higher calling You have given Your children to abstain from sexual immorality and to be pure.
