Moment 23: I’m Going to Die…

It is easy to accuse the disciples of being hard headed and not seeing so distinctly what it was Jesus was trying to communicate with them. But do we ever consider how hard headed we are at times? As you read today’s passage note the disciples’ response to Jesus’ words but also consider how you listen to God.

Moment 23Mark 10:32-52

Jesus desires for His disciples to understand what is going to happen to Him. He does not want them to be left in the dark when He is taken away or be caught off guard when He is gone. He is trying to prepare them for the fulfillment of why He came to earth. Instead of truly seeking to understand what it was Jesus was trying to prepare them for, the disciples are blinded by their own desires and will. Take a look again at all three instances where Jesus shares His purpose on earth, the response of the disciples, and Jesus’ response back.

self denial“Then He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, be killed, and rise after three days. He was openly talking about this. So Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him. But turning around and looking at His disciples, He rebuked Peter and said, ‘Get behind Me, Satan, because you’re not thinking about God’s concerns, but man’s!’ Summoning the crowd along with His disciples, He said to them, ‘If anyone wants to be My follower, he must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow Me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life because of Me and the gospel will save it. For what does it benefit a man to gain the whole world yet lose his life?” Mark 8:31-36

  • Jesus says, “I’m going to die, but I will be raised after three days.”

  • Peter takes Jesus aside to rebuke Him.

  • Jesus says, “If you want to save your life, lose it..”

LastShallBeFirst_artwork1“For He was teaching His disciples and telling them, ‘The Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of men. They will kill Him, and after He is killed, He will rise three days later.’ But they did not understand this statement, and they were afraid to ask Him. Then they came to Capernaum. When He was in the house, He asked them, ‘What were you arguing about on the way?’ But they were silent, because on the way they had been arguing with one another about who was the greatest. Sitting down, He called the Twelve and said to them, ‘If anyone wants to be first, he must be last of all and servant of all.’” Mark 9:31-35

  • Jesus says, “I’m going to die, but I will be raised after three days.”

  • The disciples argue about who is the greatest.

  • Jesus says, “If you want to be first, you must be last.”

not to be served“They were on the road, going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was walking ahead of them. They were astonished, but those who followed Him were afraid. Taking the Twelve aside again, He began to tell them the things that would happen to Him. ‘Listen! We are going up to Jerusalem. The Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priest and the scribes, and they will condemn Him to death. Then they will hand Him over to the Gentiles, and they will mock Him, spit on Him, flog Him, and kill Him, and He will rise after three days.’ Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, approached Him and said, ‘Teacher, we want You to do something for us if we ask You.’ ‘What do you want Me to do for you?’ He asked them. They answered Him, ‘Allow us to sit at Your right and at Your left in Your glory’…Jesus called them over and said to them, ‘You know that those who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles dominate them, and their men of high positions exercise power over them. But it must not be like that among you. On the contrary, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first among you must be a slave to all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life—a ransom for many.’” Mark 10:32-37, 42-45

  • Jesus says, “I’m going to die, but I will be raised after three days.”

  • The disciples ask for a position of prestige.

  • Jesus says, “If you want a high position, you must be a servant.”

How many times does God tell us what is going to happen and we don’t hear? How often do we ignore His voice because our hearts are hard and our eyes and ears are closed? What will it take to get our attention? What will it take for our lives to reflect the Dying to Live message Jesus proclaims to our hearts day after day? Lord, help me to cast aside all things that prevent me from living a life of servant hood and sacrifice for You.
