How Do You Keep New Year’s Resolutions?

Resolutions Are Easier To Keep When You Know This Secret

The statistics are staggering.  A study from the University of Scranton states: 25% of New Year’s resolutions fail in the first week.  Another third don’t last a month, and only 8 percent actually make it all year long.

Every year thousands of us resolve to do or not do at least one thing in the next year.

But as January 1st slips into the 2nd and 3rd and 4th, so does our resolve to adhere to the promise we made to ourselves or even others.

So how do we stop making resolutions that we can’t keep?

As I sat in Bible study, I couldn’t keep it in any longer.  I had waited almost 24 hours, and I was about to explode.

The day before I was working through our Bible Study lesson on the omnipotence (the power) of God.  As I read over the material on Saturday morning, the words leaped off the page.

Oh, LORD God! You Yourself made the heavens and earth by Your great power and with Your outstretched arm.  Nothing is too difficult for You!

Then the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah: “Look, I am Yahweh, the God of all flesh.  Is anything too difficult for Me?”  Jeremiah 32:17, 26

It is underlined in my Bible and highlighted in pink. (One year, as I read through the Bible, I highlighted all the names/characteristics of God in pink).  But this time as I read it, God impressed two more things into my soul, and that is what I was anxiously waiting to share.

God is power.

God is the God of all flesh.

When these two facts come together:

God is the power over all flesh!!

The ability to keep resolutions becomes easy when we remember these things.

God is Power

God doesn’t have to work out or muster up His power to get power.

He IS power.

When we rest in this truth, then we can know for sure that anything He does or wants to do will be accomplished because He has the power to do it.

God is the God of All Flesh

God created everything.  Thus, He also created flesh and holds power over flesh.  We have a flesh/sin nature.  There is no denying it.   Be we no longer have to allow our flesh to keep us in bondage.   We are not helpless in this area because our God is the God of all flesh and has the power over it.

God’s Power is Over All Our Flesh

Most of our resolutions are flesh oriented.  We want to stop smoking.  We want to exercise more.  We want to eat healthier.  These all relate to our physical/flesh.  Even those seemingly unrelated to the flesh, we want to pray more, read the Bible more, etc. are still associated with the flesh.

So if we are going to be successful in keeping our new year’s resolutions, then we must rely on the God who has the power over all flesh.

It will not be in our strength that we keep our resolutions.  It will only be through seeking God and His power to carry them out.

And if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead lives in you, then He who raised Christ from the dead will also bring your mortal bodies to life through His Spirit who lives in you.  Romans 8:11

We do have the power of God inside us to fight against our flesh!!

We can keep our resolutions because we have a God who is God over all our flesh!!

How will you keep your resolutions in 2019?

Keep your resolutions this year through the power of the God of all flesh who lives inside of you!!
