Joshua, son of Nun, was filled with the spirit of wisdom because Moses had laid his hands on him. So the Israelites obeyed him and did as the LORD had commanded Moses. Deuteronomy 34:9
Moses had passed, was buried, and the days of weeping and mourning for Moses had ended. Joshua was now the leader of the Israelites. We have closed 2018 and have entered into 2019, and just as Joshua was left to lead the people into the promised land, so we too have been called to enter into 2019 with the wisdom, strength, and courage.
But what is the key ingredient to being strong and courageous when everything inside of us screams we have no abilities, and we are failures?
“Be strong and courageous, for you will distribute the land I swore to their fathers to give them as an inheritance. Above all, be strong and very courageous to carefully observe the whole instruction My servant Moses commanded you. Do not turn from it to the right or the left, so that you will have success wherever you go. This book of instruction must not depart from your mouth; you are to recite it day and night, so that you may carefully observe everything written in it. For then you will prosper and succeed in whatever you do. Haven’t I commanded you: be strong and courageous? Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:6-9
God encourages Joshua several times to be strong and courageous as Joshua leads the people into the promised land. God does not remind him to be strong and courageous in battle tactics or the details of the day.
The main focus God tells Joshua to be strong and courageous in is obeying the Word of the Lord!!
As we enter into 2019, may we also be reminded to enter into the year with wisdom, strength, and courage. There will be battles to fight as we take possession of what rightfully belongs to the Lord. The battles will be unconventional sometimes like marching around a city seven times, or just being still and letting the Lord do all the fighting. But let us remember the key ingredient in being strong and courageous is to read the Word of the Lord, never let it leave our mouths through prayer, scripture memory and encouragement to others, and obedience at all times.
Commit this year to be strong and courageous in the Word of the Lord.
Choose a Bible reading plan, spend time in daily prayer, and begin memorizing chunks of Scripture.
The promised land has been given to you.
Be Strong and Courageous in 2019!!
The Lord is my light and my salvation- whom should I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life- of whom should I be afraid?
When evildoers came against me to devour my flesh, my foes and my enemies stumbled and fell.
Though an army deploy against me, my heart is not afraid; though war break out against me, still I am confident.
I have asked one thing from the Lord; it is what I desire: to dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, gazing on the beauty of the Lord and seeking [Him] in His temple.
For He will conceal me in His shelter in the day of adversity; He will hide me under the cover of His tent; He will set me high on a rock.
Then my head will be high above my enemies around me; I will offer sacrifices in His tent with shouts of joy. I will sing and make music to the Lord.
Lord, hear my voice when I call; be gracious to me and answer me.
In Your behalf my heart says, “Seek My face.” Lord, I will seek Your face.
Do not hide Your face from me; do not turn Your servant away in anger. You have been my help; do not leave me or abandon me, God of my salvation.
Even if my father and mother abandon me, the Lord cares for me.
Because of my adversaries, show me Your way, Lord, and lead me on a level path.
Do not give me over to the will of my foes, for false witnesses rise up against me, breathing violence.
I am certain that I will see the Lord’s goodness in the land of the living.
Wait for the Lord; be courageous and let your heart be strong. Wait for the Lord.
