The Tip Of The Iceberg–God’s Power

As we entered into Tracy Arm Fjords, the wind blowing in my face, the icebergs tipping up out of the water and glaciers sliding down the mountain tops, God’s Majesty filled the soul.  How could a God who made all of this, still have a desire to create man?

What is man that You remember him, the son of man that you look after him?  Psalm 8:4

Neither words nor pictures can do justice for the magnificent creation my family, and I were able to see and experience in July as we embarked on an Alaskan cruise for the first time.  Having always been one of my dreams, it was indeed a fantastic blessing to share it with my husband, all of my children, and extended family.  I am still praising God for His Faithfulness throughout the trip.

The power of God on display.

The enormity of it surrounding us.

Despite the enormity of God’s revealed power on display, it nowhere compares to His hidden power.

The words came flooding back to me as God reminded me of what He had been teaching me through the Behold Your God: The Weight of Majesty bible study.  In it, John Snyder uses several examples to confirm the vastness of God’s hidden power including God’s visit to Moses on Mount Sinai.

“There will always be more hidden of God’s power than there is revealed, in any of His works.  The most you can see is the edge of His ways.  His power, like Himself, is incomprehensibly great and even His coming to Mount Sinai hid more than it revealed.”

The words, “The most you can see is the edge of His ways” became all the more real as I witnessed right before my eyes the multiple tips of icebergs.  Learning that over 7/8th of an iceberg is below water,  solidified that the greatness of what I was seeing was not even close to the massive portion hiding below the water.

If I was so easily fascinated by what I could see, what would my response be if I could see the whole thing?

Such is the same with God’s power.  Throughout scripture, God reveals His power over and over through His various actions.  Our response to His revealed power is often amazement and great gratitude.  However, in every case, God has chosen to hide more of His power than He reveals.

Like an iceberg, if God has so chosen to conceal more of His power than He reveals, how much more confidence in God can we hold on to because of the greatness of His strength?

God’s power is sufficient for whatever present circumstance we currently find ourselves.

It is easy to get caught up in the cares and worries of this life.  We toss and turn all night thinking of all the things we have to get done, how to solve the most pressing issue, or figuring out a way to dissolve a situation.  But the reality is we can do nothing in our strength.  We must turn our focus to the One who does have the power to change our circumstances.  When speaking of God’s power concerning our circumstances, John Synder states:

“When you fear it will not be sufficient for the present crisis, remind yourself: all the displays of God’s power from the beginning of creation until now have hidden more of His might than they have revealed.”

If we are diligent to read and meditate on the power of God He has revealed to us; then our current circumstances fade back into the small rightful place they should remain.  When we do this, God’s revealed power encourages and lifts us up in our current situation.

Once God has spoken; twice I have heard this: that power belongs to God.  Psalm 62:11

God’s power has never changed and is the same power that works in you.

“God showed His power in the Bible, but I don’t see it in my life.”

The lies of the enemy bombard our unguarded hearts.  Of course, the enemy seeks to kill, steal, and destroy the rightful power we have through our Lord Jesus Christ.  Satan desires to keep us from remembering all those that have gone before us and have walked in God’s strength as a testimony of what God wants to do in and through us.  Again, Synder reminds us:

“What was begun by infinite power will be sustained by that same power.  Think of the power of God seen in the perseverance and preservation of every Christian, without exception, regardless of enemies without or within.”

As important as it is to study and meditate on God’s revealed power, it is just as important to remember God’s sustaining power throughout every generation.

So we begin where we started.

The tip of the iceberg.

What we see of God’s power revealed through His actions and demonstrated in the lives of His children and His creation is only a fraction of His power.  Take heart dear friend, and draw near to the omnipotent God who seeks to save and give life to the lost.

How will you respond to God’s revealed power in your life today?

Father God, may the perception of our minds be enlightened so we may know what the hope of Your calling is, what are the glorious riches of Your inheritance among the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of Your power to us who believe, according to the working of Your immense strength.  Lord God, You demonstrated this power in the Messiah by raising Him from the dead and seating Him at Your right hand in the heavens (Ephesians 1:18-21).  Help us to believe in Your power and apply it to our lives so that those around us can see and serve the one and only true and mighty God.  In Jesus Name, Amen
