Can We Pray Without Being Discouraged?

Sometimes it is easy to get discouraged when we pray, and we seemingly do not receive an answer.  It becomes even more discouraging when we read passages telling us to pray continually.  However, God does not call us to do something He does not equip us to do when we have a willing heart and faith to trust in Him.

He then told them a parable on the need for them to pray always and not become discouraged.  There was a judge in a certain town who didn’t fear god or respect man.  And a widow in that town kept coming to him, saying, ‘Give me justice against my adversary.’

For a while he was unwilling, but later he said to himself, ‘Even though I don’t fear God or respect man, yet because this widow keeps pestering me, I will give her justice, so she doesn’t wear me out by her persistent coming.’

Then the Lord said, ‘Listen to what the unjust judge says.  Will not God grant justice to His elect who cry out to Him day and night?  Will He delay to help them?  I tell you that He will swiftly grant them justice.  Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will He find that faith on earth?  Luke 18:1-8

How often are we the widow who cries out to the judge and then when she leaves his presence, forgets her requests?  The times we do remember our requests and are faithful to continue to ask for them, we get discouraged when an answer never comes and then stop praying altogether.  Christ Himself encourages to continue to pray and not become discouraged.  He asks us if we will be the ones with faith like the widow to continue to come before Him with our requests.  But in this world of busyness and flurry, how can we put this into practice?

Here is a simple printable to place inside your Bible as a daily reminder to pray continually and not become discouraged.

Print out the prayer sheet and place it in your Bible.  Every day when you go to read God’s Word, pull it out.  Pray for the requests you have written.  Update and add to the sheet as necessary.  Remember to give thanks for the requests God answers.  Praise God for His timing as you see how God responds quickly, slowly, and right on time, every time.

Thank You, Lord, for Your faithfulness in answering our requests in Your perfect timing.  Thank You for encouraging us never to give up hope.  Lord, may You find us faithful in prayer here on earth while we wait in eager anticipation for Your return.  In Jesus Name, Amen.
