Praying Over The Soil

As a large crowd was gathering, and people were flocking to Him from every town, He said in a parable:

“A sower went out to sow his seed. As he was sowing, some fell along the path; it was trampled on, and the birds of the sky ate it up. Other seed fell on the rock; when it sprang up, it withered, since it lacked moisture. Other seed fell among thorns; the thorns sprang up with it and choked it. Still other seed fell on good ground; when it sprang up, it produced a crop: 100 times [what was sown].’ As He said this, He called out, “Anyone who has ears to hear should listen!”

Then His disciples asked Him, “What does this parable mean?”

So He said, “The secrets of the kingdom of God have been given for you to know, but to the rest it is in parables, so that ‘Looking they may not see, and hearing they may not understand.” Luke 8:4-10

Lord God, the Word made flesh, give us Your ears to hear and Your eyes to see as we pray through the meaning of this parable.

“This is the meaning of the parable: The seed is the word of God. The seeds along the path are those who have heard. Then the Devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved. Luke 8:11-12

Father God, we lift up those people who come week after week into Your church to hear the Word of God, looking for the truth that Your salvation brings eternal life and yet leave without it touching their hearts.  Lord, we pray against the enemies attacks and success in snatching the Word from their hearts, preventing them from eternity with You.  Lord, we ask that you place a barrier around them so that the Word will be able to land and take root.  We pray they will surrender their lives to You, accepting the work Jesus did on the cross for their sins.

And the seeds on the rock are those who, when they hear, welcome the word with joy. Having no root, these believe for a while and depart in a time of testing. Luke 8:13

Lord God, we pray for those who enter into your church excited and receptive to the Word spoken.  We thank you that they desire to receive it openly.  However, we pray for a willingness to allow Your Word to go deeper into their hearts so that it will be able to sustain them during times of testing.  We pray that the tree planted by the streams of water would go deep and not just be a tree planted nearby (Psalm 1:3).  Draw them to the streams of living water which is in Christ Jesus.

As for the seed that fell among thorns, these are the ones who, when they have heard, go on their way and are choked with worries, riches, and pleasures of life, and produce no mature fruit. Luke 8:14

God Almighty, the great I Am, You alone are worth more than all this life has to offer.  We pray for those who hear Your word each week for an hour and feel as though they can go the rest of the week without spending any more time with You.  We pray You would help them to daily fix their eyes upon You (Hebrews 12: ) so that they will be worried about nothing but would pray continually with thanksgiving letting their requests be made known to You (Philippians 4: ).  We pray they will not be caught up in the lust of the eyes, the lust of the flesh, and the boastful pride of life (1 John 2:16).  Lord may their fruit be fruit that multiples and doesn’t just look useful to the outside world.  May they not bear false fruit but a sustaining life-giving fruit that brings glory to You alone.

But the seed in the good ground-these are the ones who, having heard the word with an honest and good heart, hold on to it and by enduring, bear fruit. Luke 8:15

Lord, who can enter Your presence but those who have clean hands and a pure heart (Psalm 24:3-4 ).  Prepare our hearts this week to be able to come hear Your word with an honest and good heart.  May Your Word land on softened soil, soil that is ready to be embraced and worked during the week even in the midst of trials and testing.  May we bear fruit for the world to see and others come to know You.  Lord, just as we have prayed for others, we also pray the same for ourselves.  Protect us from the enemy stealing away any of Your Word that You desire to take root in our lives.  Help us to not come to church with a happy face only to be battered and torn down the rest of the week because we have not sought to stay near the stream of living water.  Help us not to be trapped in the cares of this world and lose sight of the one true and living God who controls all things.  Father may Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. In Jesus Name, Amen
