Somewhere Over the Rainbow

rainbow“And God said, ‘This is the sign of the covenant I am making between Me and you and every living creature with you, a covenant for all future generations: I have placed My bow in the clouds, and it will be a sign of the covenant between Me and the earth. Whenever I form clouds over the earth and the bow appears in the clouds, I will remember my covenant between Me and you and all the living creatures, water will never again become a flood to destroy every creature. The bow will be in the clouds, and I will look at it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and all the living creatures on earth.’ God said to Noah, ‘This is the sign of the covenant that I have confirmed between Me and every creature on earth.’” Genesis 9:12-17

Whenever I see a rainbow I am immediately drawn to the story of Noah and God’s promise to never flood the earth again. However, yesterday the Holy Spirit opened my eyes to a deeper understanding of what the rainbow represents. No it is NOT the twisted symbol our society has made it into. Rather it is one that represents part of the character of the one and only true God. Please read the following passages as I did yesterday morning, when I was suddenly hit with excitement about the truth that discovered.

“Immediately I was in the Spirit, and a throne was set there in heaven. One was seated on the throne, and the One seated looked like jasper and carnelian stone. A rainbow that looked like an emerald surrounded the throne.” Revelation 4:2-3

rainbow cloud“The shape of a throne with a the appearance of sapphire stone was above the expanse. There was a form with the appearance of a human on the throne high above. From what seemed to be His waist up, I saw a gleam like amber, with what looked like fire enclosing it all around. From what seemed to be His waist down, I also saw what looked like fire. There was a brilliant light all around Him. The appearance of the brilliant light all around was like that of a rainbow in a cloud on a rainy day. This was the appearance of the form of the LORD’s glory. When I saw it, I fell facedown and heard a voice speaking.” Ezekiel 1:26-28

Is that not the coolest thing? The God who sits on His throne in heaven reveals the form of His glory in a rainbow!! That was so awesome and exciting to me because it is always a miracle when I see a rainbow in the sky. It is so beautiful and yet our society over the past couple of decades has turned the symbol that represents the form of the LORD’s glory into a sign that represents blatant sin as found and described in Romans 1:24-27.   The true and only representation of the rainbow belongs to God alone and Satan will not be able to steal it from Him.

pot-of-goldAnother image that comes to my mind when I see or think of rainbows is the Wizard of Oz when Dorothy is dreaming about going back home. She breaks out in the song, “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” (Go ahead, you can sing it if you wish.) But what is so amazing to me now is that I know exactly what is over the rainbow. It is my God who is sitting on His throne and that rainbow is the form of His glory being reflected to me. In addition, when God sends out His mighty angel in the last days guess what will be surrounding him?…

“Then I saw another might angel coming down from heaven, surrounded by a cloud, with a rainbow over his head.” Revelation 10:1

Yes, God goes with His angel just like His promise to never leave us or forsake us (Deuteronomy 31:6). Now that is awesome news.

So we don’t have to wonder if there is gold at the end of the rainbow any longer.

It is God our Savior (Revelation 4:2-8).

We no longer have to wonder and sing about somewhere over the rainbow.

God’s word tells us it is the form of the LORD’s glory

(Ezekiel 1:28).
